Current Situation
Both Melbourne High School (MHS) and the MHS Old Boy’s Association (OBA) have existed for over 100 years. Both have a significant heritage that evokes strong sentiments from students, staff and old boys.
The school ethos and many programs are linked to the heritage of the school. Protecting the heritage of the school is important as it impacts on existing and future students, their parents and families and teaching staff and influences the way in which old boys interact with the school. Some elements of the school’s heritage are protected by law and require permission from Heritage Victoria before they can be altered.
MHS currently employs people on a part time basis to archive and maintain a collection of heritage items. The resources allocated (in terms of space and staff time) to the heritage collection are unsuitable to meet long term needs. Nor are they meeting the current needs of the school community.
There is an urgent need for MHS and the OBA to develop a unified strategy to maintain the heritage of both organisations in the best possible manner.
